Algonquin power has constructed a 99 megawatt wind farm near the town of St Leon in Manitoba, Canada. This is one of Canada’s biggest windfarms in operation. It can be found 150km southwest of Winnipeg and according to locals, it has brought a lot more attetion and money to the small town in terms of taxes and tourism.

St Leon’s Wind Turbine Stats

According to the Algonquin website, the windfarm consists of 63 Vestas V32 Wind turbine-generators which are each capable of delivering 1.65 megawatts. In addition they:

  • Stand 60m tall
  • Blade diameter of 82 meters
  • Maximum capacity is reached when blades are moving at 10 meters / second
  • Typical capacity is at 14.4RPM
  • Weigh 220 tonnes each
All of these wind turbines create 99 megawatts of electricity – enough to power 41000 homes.

A little while back, I managfed to get some photos of this windfarm from Celesta Thiessen. Here is a Gallery of some of the amazing photos she took of it. See what you think, and feel free to leave your comments below:

This is the best book ever on the subject of energy independence. Our country’s economy has suffered a great deal due to the high cost of fuel this past year. The current lull in gas prices wont last long OPEC will see to that, they already cut production 1.5 million barrels a day and announced plans to cut it more. We must not get complacent about our energy crisis when the gas price dips. We need to invest in America’s future and become energy independent. We could product clean low cost electricity and provide much needed new jobs. It is a win -win situation for our country. The last 168 BILLION dollar stimulus pkg did nothing for our economy. Why not invest instead in getting our country started on the path to energy independence, that money would have gone a long way towards that. The book has a cool web site that lets you look inside the book, read the back cover and look at the table of contents. Wilson even outlined a time plan and legislative agenda to get our country off oil. This is an amazing and much needed book I highly recommend this book for anyone who is worried about our economy and wants to see our country become energy independent. http://www.themanhattanprojectof2009.com

They look absolutely massive! I never really thought of wind turbines as been so interesting but this definitely makes me want to visit a wind farm.

I wonder why there aren’t more windfarms in the world. This is much more beautiful than an unsightly and ugly coal burning power plant. Hopefully Obama steps up to this.

Whoa… 220 tonnes per unit? How on earth do they build these things?

That would take some serious cash to setup. Apparently you can get really cheap wind turbines and stuff for your home.

this photos of windfarm are really amazing, so amazing. It is impressive fact that wind turbines create 99 megawatts of electricity – enough to power 41000 homes. I did not know that.

  9. wind turbine Says:

Wind turbines are used to generate electricity from the kinetic power of the wind. Historical they were more frequently used as a mechanical device to turn machinery.
