Think Melbourne doesn’t get enough sunshine year round to supply you with solar heated hot water? Think again!
Latitudes further south than Melbourne use solar hot water, so this option is well worth considering. These days, with government rebates being available for those who want to switch from electrically heated water to solar hot water (if you’re eligible), heating your water with the rays of the sun is a smart choice.
Types of Solar Water Heating Systems
Solar hot water comes in two forms, but both methods use the heat of the sun’s rays to give you the hot water you need for bathing, washing the dishes and washing your laundry in warm water. The most widely used method consists of a set of pipes (usually in a sort of black glassy panel) that is installed on a north-facing roof as close as possible to your hot water tank. This method often also uses evacuated tubes to help the water in the pipe heat up and to stay hot via insulation. Sometimes, these solar hot water systems have a gas/electricity-boost, which means that even on the cloudiest, coldest day of a Melbourne winter, you will have all the hot water you need.
The second method uses heat pump technology. The heat pump will take the heat out of your house (where you don’t want it) or elsewhere, and will transfer it into the water. And as the excess heat in your house or in the atmosphere is heated by the sun, this is indeed a form of solar hot water.
Solar Water System Rebates for Melbourne Residents
Eligible Melbourne residents are able to qualify for two solar hot water rebates: the Metropolitan Melbourne Solar Hot Water Rebate Program and also the Australian Government Solar Hot Water Rebate. The Government solar hot water scheme offers rebates of up to $1500 to help cover the costs of replacing an electric or gas water heating system with solar hot water.

I would like the blog list out the pros and cons of the system, for example, there are so many components on the system, would be system become more easy to be faulty as any one of the components can fail and make the whole system fail? How much the maintanence cost higher than tranditional heater, etc.
