If you live in Sydney, installation of a solar hot water system makes good sense. Sunlight is a free source of energy that is sustainable and has no carbon footprint. And it can save you money – up to 25% of the average home energy spending goes on heating water, so if you switch to solar, you can save money as well.
How does a solar hot water system work? Simply put, the heat energy put out by the sun is trapped inside the solar hot water installation and this heat energy is transferred to the water inside pipes in the installation. A roof-installed solar water heating system is usually coloured black, as this absorbs the greatest amount of heat and light energy, and glass is used as insulation to make sure that the heat is not lost back into the air again.
Convection keeps the water flowing through the pipes to make sure that all your hot water is heated properly. Some solar hot water installations have a gas booster to take care of those cloudy days that we get in Sydney’s winter so your water is hot enough to prevent Legionnaire’s Disease.
Sydney Solar Installation Rebates
Currently, two rebates are available to eligible Sydney residents for solar hot water installation. These are the Australian Government Rebate, which can earn a rebate of up to $1000 in RECs, and the New South Wales Government Rebate, which is worth up to $1200. These rebates go towards the cost of replacing an existing gas- or electricity-powered water heating system with a solar water heater.

Great article – thanks.
I’m glad to learn that some governments have seen the “light”. In Denmark where I live there is no rebate when installing solar panels.
