If you’re lucky enough to live in Brisbane and lucky enough again to own your own swimming pool, and you are considering the heat of the sun in conjunction with your pool, you probably just think of the pool as a place to go to escape the heat of the sun. True enough, as far as it goes, but if your pool was icy cold, you wouldn’t really want to get into it for long, even on the hottest day that Brisbane’s weather can throw at you (and if you did, the contrast in temperatures could put too much strain on your heart).
Simple Solar Pool Heaters
The sneaky way around this is to try a little solar pool heating, using the rays of the sun to get your pool up to a comfortable and refreshing temperature. The simplest method of solar pool heating is to place a thick black piece of insulating plastic over the top of the pool (providing that the pool is in direct sunlight). This absorbs the heat of the sun so it can warm the water, and insulates it so the heat is not lost into the air again via evaporation. Other methods are a little more complicated but do not require your pool to be located in full sunshine.
Advanced Solar / Electric Pool Heating
The next simplest method uses black plastic pipes rigged up so water circulates through the pipes where it is heated, then back into the pool again. This method requires electricity to pump the water through, which can be an extra cost in pool maintenance (however, smart pool owners will realise that Brisbane has enough sunshine not only for solar pool heating but also for solar power and will rig up a PV panel to power the pump).
Solar water heating systems of the type used for domestic hot water heating are another option, but you will need more of the evacuated pipes and roof-mounted plates to get the water to the right temperature, as your pool has more water than your hot water tank. The real advantage of this method is that you can keep the pool at the right temperature year round. Heat pump technology can also be used as a solar pool heater, a method that takes the heat out of your home where you don’t want it and puts it into the pool where you do want it.

Hi, I found this article quite interesting and it makes me want to move to Australia and utilise the sunshine there, but no I have to cope with rainy Britain
I was just wondering what the majority of people use to heat their swimming pools over in sunny Australia? Obviously solar heated pools would be ideal, but it must be costly to install etc
